WalkWest 2021 impact

Thursday 2 December 2021

From 1-21 November, hundreds of people took part in the WalkWest Virtual Landmarks Challenge encouraging family and friends to support them as they walked 42km in 21 days.

As part of the challenge, participants were encouraged to exercise wherever they wanted and record their daily activities. Fundraising dashboards lit up with the virtual landmarks as milestones were achieved. There was even some unusual wildlife spotted including cows and kangaroos.

Sunshine Hospital Day Oncology Cancer Nurse, Lon, recruited her colleagues to join in and raise funds for their patients.

“I recruited colleagues from my unit. Our Unit Director and some of the nursing staff joined. It was great to see so many people get on board,” said Lon.

Lon and The Day Oncology team from Sunshine Hospital are on top of the fundraising leader board having raised more than $10,000.

“We shared our page to family and friends to donate online,” said Lon.

“My friends and family donated some delicious baked goods with all the proceeds going to our team’s fundraising. The WalkWest logo biscuits were a big hit.”

The event was also strongly supported by Western Health Foundation’s corporate partners. Event partner Dow pledged to match all donations on Dow Double Donation Day, to a total of $10,000. Exceeding expectations, the matched donations made it the largest fundraising day ever raising $21,671.28.

Participants have logged more than 18,000km with more than $119,000 for Western Health’s cancer services.
