A Police Memorial Dedication Ceremony was held last week to officially recognise the contribution from the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation, Westgate Branch to the Western Health Foundation.
Western Health Chief Executive, Adj. Prof Russell Harrison and Emergency Department staff joined Victoria Police Chief Commissioner, Shane Patton and dignitaries from the Blue Ribbon Foundation Westgate Branch in honouring the life and service of Senior Constable Barry O'Donoghue and Constable Malroy John McDonald.
The Blue Ribbon Foundation raised more than $80,000 for the Western Health Foundation which was used to purchase and install two ultra-sound machines in the Emergency Department at Sunshine Hospital. These essential pieces of equipment help staff to detect internal bleeding and injury to vital organs. The combination of portability and hi-res digital imaging allows doctors to make a quick and accurate diagnosis in often critical situations.
A commemorative plaque was unveiled at the event and will be installed permanently at Sunshine Hospital to acknowledge the Blue Ribbon Foundation and honour the lives of Senior Constable Barry O'Donoghue and Constable Malroy John McDonald.
The moving dedication ceremony was fitting for both Senior Constable O'Donoghue and Constable McDonald who had given so much to serve and protect our community. Both are included on the Police Honour Roll.
Constable McDonald joined Victoria Police in 1963 and served Russell St, Williamstown and Footscray. He died in the line of duty, 29 January 1966 due to a traffic incident.
Senior Constable O'Donoghue had served with the Victoria Police for over 10 years, on 11 August, 1980 he died whilst on patrol when he was fatally injured in a collision
The Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation perpetuates the memory of members of the Victoria Police who have died in the line of duty through the support of worthwhile community projects within Victoria.
