Celebrating the Vietnamese community’s extraordinary generosity

Friday 29 August 2025

It was an honour to host a special afternoon tea at Sunshine Hospital to celebrate the remarkable generosity of Melbourne's Vietnamese community. The gathering brought together 30 dedicated supporters representing the collective efforts that have raised almost $600,000 for the new Footscray Hospital, particularly funding the purchase of a cutting-edge robotic surgery machine.

The intimate celebration was more than just a thank you event—it was a powerful demonstration of what communities can achieve when they unite around a shared vision for better healthcare.

Unprecedented funds raised

The Vietnamese community's contribution was instrumental in helping Western Health Foundation achieve its $1.1 million campaign target—the single largest fundraising amount for any one campaign in the Foundation's history.

CEO Professor Russell Harrison emphasised the deep connection between Western Health and the Vietnamese community, who have generously supported Western Health over many years.

Each attendee received a special acknowledgment letter and commemorative pin in recognition of their outstanding commitment to community health and wellbeing. Western Health Foundation Acting Director Sharon Read acknowledged the community's broader impact.

"Your incredible generosity over many years has made such a difference—not only in funding important projects like the new Footscray Hospital and the robotic surgery equipment, but in inspiring our staff and reminding us how much stronger we are when we work together,"

The innovative robotic medical technology will ensure that residents across Melbourne's west have access to world-class medical care close to home. Mr Hiep Nguyen, representing the Vietnamese Community in Australia – Victoria Chapter, shared, "We are deeply heartened to know that the funds raised will be put to transformative use, equipping Western Health with a cutting-edge robotic surgery system—among the few of their kind in Australia."

A legacy of compassion and giving

Venerable Phuoc Tan Thich OAM from Quang Minh Temple explained that the contribution from countless volunteers and benefactors reflects more than financial support—it embodies the values of compassion, generosity, and service that guide the Vietnamese community.

Community fundraising committee member, Dr Nhan Pham, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the Group’s extraordinary track record of giving across the Western Health hospitals and beyond saying that while there was a small group present at the event, the group represents thousands of good hearts who have previously raised funds for Western Health.

For the Vietnamese community, this contribution is an opportunity to say thank you to the Australian community as Mr Nguyen shared, "Over the past five decades, our community has woven its culture, values and aspirations into the vibrant multicultural fabric of this nation. The fundraiser is more than a contribution to a hospital; it is a meaningful milestone in our ongoing journey of giving back to the country that has given us so much."

Western Health Foundation extends its deepest gratitude to the Vietnamese community for their extraordinary generosity and ongoing partnership in building a healthier future for Melbourne's west.
